Rattan and Wicker Furniture are pretty much the same thing, only with different looks. And it isn’t a contemporary marvel. It’s been around since who flung the chunk. In fact, it has been around since at least Ancient Egypt (3000 BC) and maybe even longer. Even so, wicker and rattan furniture didn’t become popular in the United States until about the mid -1850s.
At that time, the most common form of wicker was rattan, as it was used to strap down cargo on the trading ships. During this time, a man by the name of Cyrus Wakefield discovered large amounts of these rattan straps on the shipping docks in Boston. He immediately recognized the potential and began designing his own line of rattan furniture, started his own company, and is now considered the father of American wicker furniture.
Country Vintage Home now offers a collection of primitive furniture made from rattan, wicker, and natural fiber that we are sure you are going to love!
